Welcome to another edition of Alicorn Reviews and this time we have ourselves another Pie family episode. I don't know what it is about Maud Pie but despite being the complete opposite of Pinkie she seems to impact her in some form. Maud's diffidently a strange case as there's something mysterious about the rock loving mare. She's related to Pinkie but the both of them have nothing in common aside coming from a rock farm (yeah, that's a thing). Between her quiet attitudes, has pet rock named Boulder, and the way she talks just adds more to the mystery. However, Maud surprises Pinkie with announcing to her that she has a boyfriend named Mudbriar. There's one problem with Maud's new boyfriend, and Pinkie doesn't like him. Let's diverge into the mystery of how Pinkie could not like any pony. It's been a while since we saw Maud in FIM and as you noticed has gotten a boyfriend recently. We get introduced to an earth pony named Mudbriar, and his talent has something to do with wood and sticks. He diffidently has a striking resemblance to Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory. I mean he has the skinny frame with vast intelligence, and he speaks in a direct formal manner. Unfortunately, Jim Parson (Sheldon) doesn't play the role for Mudbriar, but that still would've been awesome if he did act the guy. For someone who's a stick in the mud (no pun intended as that's literally his cutie mark) sure makes me chuckle. It's just so funny how he speaks formally that it even drives Pinkie insane. It also gets me every time Mudbriar says "technically" in his usual calm attitude. The reason is because when he says "technically" before his explanation, it drives Pinkie off the edge. One of the best moments with him is when they were in Pinkie's secret party planning cavern. It's hilarious how he simply acts calm while stating how Maud doesn't like surprise parties. Seeing Pinkie flip out from his comment is both funny and adorable. Of course, I couldn't forget his pet twig named Twiggy another similar trait to Maud's Boulder. The guy even has some kind of third eye where he pictures his information in holograms that surround him. I noticed something about this odd couple and since I made a comparison to Sheldon, Maud might be the Amy Farrah Fowler of MLP. Maud is probably not as smart as her but the mannerisms are obviously there. It's a shame that Mayim Bialik (Amy) wasn't considered for the voice actor when they were doing the casting. I make this comparison because they are some characters in Gen 4 (including EQG) that got casted for a reason. Discord is basically this universe's version of Star Trek's Q and J.K. Yearning is a parody to J.K. Rowling. Cheese Sandwich is a pony version of Weird Al Yankovic and serving as Pinkie's male counterpart. DHX at least keeps the trend up in many ways but with their own nice parody spin. I consider this MLP's version of Shammy (SheldonxAmy) as Maud and Mud have so much in common. Another thing that makes me come to this is the fact Maud actually smiled for once. I'm unsure if I should become concerned for the mare or be absolutely intrigued. That honestly amazes me how it took a guy to make Maud smile but not Pinkie's party antics. As we all know Pinkie is the only member of the Pie family to come off happy and outgoing. I guess there's always a first for everything especially when it comes to Maud. Pinkie for this episode goes through something she rarely ever experiences with anyone. That's with actually not liking someone and in this case Mudbriar. What are the odds of having two strange occurrences happen between two Pie members in one episode? The premise of this episode is similar to a Friend in Deed from Season 2 only it's in reverse. It's usually a different character that would not like or get annoyed by the party planner pony. As mentioned earlier, Mudbriar drives Pinkie insane with his calm attitude and being rather informative. I always found her overreaction in anger I thing of beauty that's both scary and adorable. I mean she literally spoke in a near demonic voice once when Applejack didn't keep her Pinkie Promise. Unfortunately, it's because of moments like these that had Bronies produce crappy fan fictions about her killing people. For those of you who wrote those, shame on you for writing such contrive and crappy pieces of writing about a murderous Pinkie. Her interaction towards Mudbriar was nearly as good as with Cranky because I can't think of a time when she got annoyed at someone. It's interesting because Pinkie is the first to want to become friends with anyone. She literally goes out of her way from singing a telegram to planning a party out of nowhere for them. Yet, in this instant, Pinkie managed to get angered by Mudbriar doing the simplest things like claiming "stick abuse". As the plot continues so does the Pink Wonder's antics as she even ran back to her parents' rock farm in the middle of the night. Damn, I guess Maud is Pinkie's BBSFF (Best Big Sister Friends Forever) if that is going to get her this upset. After staying at the farm, Marble (the shy sister) silently suggests to Limestone to show Pinkie what Maud sees in Mudbriar. Limestone's example of rocks and geo stones convinces her that she may see someone dull, but Maud sees a nice guy. Of course, we do get a last outburst from Pinkie when she confuses an olive branch with something else as an apology. Only for him to point it out that it wasn't technically an olive branch. For a filler episode it was actually enjoyable as we get to see things that some of us didn't think would be possible. Mudbriar isn't exactly the most exciting character as I found guys like Cheese Sandwich and Quibble Pants more entertaining. That's not to say he came off lack luster since Mudbriar manages to annoy Pinkie without even trying. He's diffidently the Sheldon Cooper of MLP then again this series always seems to have its own version of another character. The highlight for Maud is how she smiled genuinely for the first time. I can't recall an episode where she ever cracked a smile since Maud didn't come in until Season 4. Damn retcons always adding stuff in later as usual... Then we have the cherry on this sundae, and that's Pinkie not liking one person. As I have said before, Pinkie likes everyone so color me shocked if there is one pony or human she hates. The shipping isn't something to get excited for compared to Pear Butter and Blight Mac. I guess there is a first for everything especially when it comes to the Pie family. I will be looking forward to the potential shipping between Pinkie and Cheese someday. Probably not since Hasbro always seem to blotch a potential idea. Rating: 8.0/10 Very Good
