Welcome to a new Retro's Blog and we continue the hype of the new FNAF: Sister Location with a discussion of the best knockoff titles. The Sister Location game has been out for the last couple of weeks and shows a great positive reaction with some of the best overhauling yet. Speaking of the best yet, on this edition of Retro’ Blog I’ll explain the best knockoff games out there that use other characters from several series. 5. Five Nights at Pokémon We start our list with another Pokémon FNAF game but unlike Team Rocket’s this actually has effort put into it. The graphics use Flash for the detail and animation similar to Five Nights at Sonic's, however, its environments and characters are drawn much cleaner. It still captures the mood of a haunted pizzeria despite having a cartoonish design. I also love the cute piano version of Lavender Town that plays in Banette’s room. The gameplay does, in fact, have the same mechanics and challenges from FNAF 2. When playing this I knew not to expect any innovation as these are knockoff titles. The only thing that’s probably disappointing is the Pokémon type being used to represent the FNAF cast. Why Is Ursaring being Freddy and Lopunny acting as Bonnie? I figured Pikachu would be Freddy and Golden Freddy and Jigglypuff would be Bonnie. As for the others, they fit with Porygon being Mangle, Combuskin as Chica, Zoroark as Foxy, and Banette as The Puppet. Pikachu and Mew are treated the same way as Golden Freddy with them being hallucinations. The only difference is that they don’t result in a Game Over but rather a jump scare. For once there is an actual good Pokemon FNAF to play with which compared to Team Rocket's was a huge step up. 4. Five Nights at Krusty Krab's Just like with all the other well-known franchises it’s no surprise to see a FNAF knockoff from Sponge Bob with using the Krusty Krab. One thing you will notice is that everything was made in 3D rather than using still images. This made the environment come off truly creepy and the way the animatronics of Sponge Bob (Chica), Mr. Krabs (Freddy), Squidward (Foxy), Patrick (Bonnie), and Sandy (Freddy) standing in their positions on the camera adds to this. I also like the little effect of being underwater which shows how much effort the designer put into the graphics. Anyway, the basic mechanics of checking the cameras, closing the doors when the animatronics get close, and the flashlight are used here. Like any FNAF game, each character has a different challenge from the other. I did find it surprising to see Squidward as Foxy considering how much of a nerd he is on the show. I was expecting Sandy to be the Foxy type because of her passionate aggression. The others made sense when you factor their personalities but it still was funny to see Patrick start out on a toilet out of all places LOL. This is still among the best ones I have seen because of the graphic atmosphere and the quality gameplay. 3. Five Nights at Wario's 3 You can tell this was going to make the list when I explained a little about how good the series has been. Anyway, since the second game is the next one I’ll explain a short backstory of this knockoff. Years ago Wario and his brother Waluigi opened a fast food restaurant and a factory but the company closed down when the place caught on fire killing many of the employees. Wario, Waluigi, Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser all died on these locations and now haunt the grounds. The third game takes place in a house similar to FNAF4 as the haunted ghosts of Wario return to hunt the player down. The characters have their challenges return just like in the last game as you try to avoid them at all costs. The theme is also trying to use FNAF 3’s backstory because this game is presented as a conclusion to the series. However, there are some new features such as Ashley from Wario Ware and the player after each night can pick the location they start out of two places. This, of course, would change the challenge of every night which is something the FNAF series doesn’t have except for Sister Location. 2. Five Nights at Wario's 2 This series surprised me after watching a let’s play from a YouTube users named Poised and his hilarious screams of terror. Despite being a knockoff that used images taken from Google similar to that of the FNAF Team Rocket, it still used these environments right. I also love the way it used the lightning as a way to tell if someone was in the hall or the room with Toad in the closet. It definitely made looking into the hall creepy as the anticipation grew until the lightning would flash. The gameplay is similar to FNAF 2 with watching out for multiple characters while making sure the power is always up by holding down a switch. There are also no doors and to avoid any of the ghosts you simply go into the room with the power switch and try not to move. Once the footsteps move away and you hear the door down the hall slam is when it’s safe to come out. For once these designers try to follow the standards set by FNAF as each character has their own challenges. One designer may have failed with Pokémon but this developer continues to improve with this series. 1. Five Nights at Pinkie’s 2 This isn’t all too surprising to see myself give an MLP FNAF the top award to the best knockoff so far. You are the security guard that watches these pony versions of the FNAF crew but with the shows actual characters in their place. Pinkie is Freddy (duh), Rainbow is Foxy (no surprise there), Twilight is Bonnie, Fluttershy is Chica, Applejack is Golden Freddy, Spike is Balloon Boy, Rarity is The Puppet, and Discord is Mangle. Just like the Krusty Krab FNAF, the graphics are done in 3D space with actual 3D models being used to render the characters. The mood and environments are about the same as FNAF 2’s map with no charges made. The gameplay is the same too with watching out for the characters and their challenges each one has. Sure it’s the same exact thing as FNAF 2 but then again this is a knockoff using MLP characters. In the end, the designer made a good MLP version of FNAF 2 that at least holds the golden standard set by the original series. Compared to the worst, this is honestly a breath of fresh air and it’s great to finally see knockoffs being made with many good standards. I felt that these were the best ones to play through as all of them had a great atmosphere and mood. Even when the Wario games were using still images from Google, the designer did a good job creating the atmosphere. The Sponge Bob and Wario games were the best to use these environments which made them entirely creepy. The gameplay in some of these had no real changes aside from picking your locations to hide in Wario’s 3. However, despite being exactly the same it still has the quality standard that FNAF is known to have in each entry. The Wario games did this the best with making the gameplay a little different like sneaking into the back room or changing your hiding locations after each night. With the knockoff titles already covered, that just leaves the fan-made games that are based off the actual series with no crossovers. I will eventually cover that one day as there is a lot to talk about regarding the fan-made titles. Source Image Cover: YouTube.com (December 4, 2014). Five Nights At Ponies [A Work in Progress}.
