A new edition of Horror Gaming is up, and the Halloween season has begun for us to celebrate the usual ghastly festivities. To start the spooky season off, this edition has us take a look at an original gaming creepypasta called Conplus. During 2014, gaming CPs as explained many times weren’t known for quality storytelling aside from a few gems. It was also a time when a few writers tried breaking away from the constant tropes that often was the scary part of these plots. Godzilla NES and Metroid II: Secret Worlds were the first to raise the bar thanks to good writing. Another thing that made these set the bar higher is the quality depictions of what the characters explained were happening to them. While you don’t need imagery to create a unique horror tale, it does add to the immersion and allows your imagination to go even more wild. In the early 2020s, creepypastas began losing their luster thanks to poor writing, authors who can’t take criticism and obnoxiously long one to two sentence titles. The bar might’ve been raised high but it’s obvious these gaming CP authors have moved to a much better format of Analog Horror.
Conplus is an original gaming creepypasta similar to the Theater and Pale Luna that tells a tale of a man recalling playing an odd Super NES title. It was also a multicart in the same vein as Action 52 that is known to have poorly designed games on them. However, unlike Action 52, Conplus's games were developed competently with no broken designs according to the story. There is one odd feature of this cartridge, and it’s how a plastic bubble was placed on the top right. The only cartridge based release to have this feature was the Game Boy Camera. The CP does have that uniqueness to the theme and there was never a Super NES cart to have a camera like function. That really does add to the curiosity of what it could’ve been based on the fact the cover gives no indication of being a multicart release. When we look at the Sega 6-Pak and Super Mario All Stars, usually these carts tell us what’s inside. Conplus features six games each being from rarely used genres in the industry. However, the man remembers some strange things about playing each one after going through their challenges as an adult. Will the man discover the games were as he remembers them or something evil, he finds there as an adult? Conplus Creepypasta Review

Welcome to a new edition of Horror Gaming and it is that time of the year again for the Halloween season. I do tend to read more horror than watch those marathons during the Autumn months. It seems reading these campfire tales engage my imagination more than the usual popcorn flick that does jump scares. However, just like films that produce Troll 2 and Good Will horror flicks, Creepypasta are no strangers to this either. Now, gaming CPs are still notorious for producing crappypastas despite the quality today being in a much better position. The Godzilla NES 2 and Friday the 13th NES horror tales are the recent stories to continue the quality standard. While those written using Mario games continue down a hellish path of terrible plots that could test one’s patience.
Now, I hate bringing bad news but an actual MaRIo III was published a couple of years ago. You heard that right as the sequel that wasn’t needed has become a reality. The sad thing is when I wrote that last part in the double review of the first two stories it was a joke based on no cliffhanger. However, now that there is an actual MaRIo III, you know this isn’t going to lead to good storytelling. The Trilogy is the Sonic.EXE of creepypastas based on how poorly both series' first two plots were written. Even though Pokemon and My Little Pony have their own EXE CPs, they weren’t as terrible as these two series. The question is how there exists a third arc when the second ended with no cliffhanger. You’ll be surprised what some will do as an excuse to make an unnecessary sequel. A perfect example comes from the infamous film Troll 2 which not only had nothing to do with the first movie but used that as an excuse. Can the third MaRIo redeem itself by being a decent tale? Or follow the Troll 2 formula without the “it’s so bad it’s good” shtick? MaRIo III Creepypasta Review A new edition of Horror Gaming is up, and we tackle a unique creepypasta about a strange background character in Paperboy 2. The second month of Summer often reminds us about the traditional fourth of July and other seasonal celebrations. Now, what I mean by seasonal celebrations is your typical BBQs, pool parties and simply going to the beach for a day of relaxation. If it’s not these activities that reminds me of the Summer Days in the US, then the simple things like a paperboy/girl delivering newspapers does that. Just take a look at Stranger Things Season 3 and to an extent the fourth one — despite taking place in the Spring — highlights these things easily. Crossing Souls (an indie pixel style game) also does a good job highlighting those classic 80s American tropes.
Now, the creepypasta is unique for a couple of reasons, and it is because the story simply doesn’t focus on a player having a haunting experience. It is the fact someone took the time to use a niche series that not even Golden Age gamers bring up and turn this into a creepy theory. The CP is the only Paperboy one to my knowledge so far as most never write a horror tale about a kid delivering newspapers. That is like trying to turn Mortal Kombat into a CP, but the problem is its already M rated with as much gore as any horror film. The same thing could be said about Paperboy since there is little to go on aside from being a parody of America’s 80s tropes. The theme has the narrator talk about a weird character in the background called the Gray Man. It is simply a man taking his trash to the curb, but things don’t always appear as black and white as we like to think one’s actions are. The narrator has a theory of what the Gray Man might represent based on a family murder that happened in the 90s. A Figure in Gray Creepypasta Review A new edition of Horror Gaming is up, and we tackle an Earthbound CP called Crypt of the Ancients. The series is the textbook definition of a niche series at its core as till this day not many people know this exists. Each game follows a different story set in certain eras where a group of young heroes face an alien overlord named Giygas. However, the third game takes place in a completely different era of Earth where human civilization was reduced. I might understand why some love the series, but it is another Dragon Quest with pop culture references. Most of this niche fandom will get annoyed by that take but it is obvious why this is a niche series. The thing is EarthBound is often hindered by dated mechanics that don’t evolve the gameplay enough. Even Lufia II changed up several things from the original that actually made this a unique sequel. While the first two entries stayed true to the Old Guard’s format of Ultima and Dungeons & Dragons from the mid-80s.
The CP itself was the first time I listen to a horror theme EarthBound tale as this was years after the Giygas Theory was known. Now, Crypt of the Ancients is a tale about a guy named Nick who borrows a copy of EarthBound after enjoying what he saw. However, after the game was accidentally broken and he rushes to the local game store to get it fixed, the guy discovers once getting it back the RPG plays vastly different. That is when Nick learns of the Crypt that is mentioned often through his second play through. You are wondering how anyone can turn this into horror despite the backstory already being morbid. That is what makes this a little interesting at face value since this Crypt is another Lost Level CP. So how different and strange will Nick’s playthrough become? EarthBound: Crypt of the Ancients Creepypasta Review A new edition of Horror Gaming is up, and we take a look at a Mega Man Creepypasta. Similar to Mario and Sonic, the Mega Man CPs are notorious for being among the worst ones written. I have yet to come across a good story from the Blue Bomber. The reason these are usually terrible is because they are riddled with many clichés and logic gaps. It's obvious Sonic.EXE started a terrible trend nearly a decade ago as many others would try to emulate its bad writing. Even a few Pokemon CPs were guilty of this in many ways since usually that series produces good results. All you have to do is look at Blood Edition or my recently reviewed Forgotten Yellow article to get the gist of how bad these creepypastas are. It's already bad enough that they decided to write a Sonic.EXE 2 when the story never needed one.
Now, when the Blue Bomber has a CP, Mega Man 2 or the X games are the “go to” as the bases of a plot. The reason these games are used as the premises for the plot is because they are widely known. Even though MM2 is vastly overrated, it's still considered a classic and a favorite among Golden Age gamers. That is the reason no one really talks about the Original game; despite the issues it has; this might also be the contributing factor. The plot is about a guy recalling a time in the late 90s where he played all the Mega Man titles except for the first one. After purchasing MM1 at his local game store, weird stuff happens during his play through with the strange robotic blob of the Yellow Devil. Is this some weird rom hack put together by a creepy programmer? Or something worse beyond the capabilities of a person? The Yellow Devil Creepypasta Review A new edition of Horror Gaming is up, and we go over a creepypasta about a Pokemon Yellow version playing differently. As mentioned, gaming CPs slowly gained a reputation of producing poor results during the early portion of the 2010s. With the exception of Ben Drowned, Team Fortress 2 CPs and some original ones, these were the only good examples. When Sonic.EXE, MaRIo and Pokemon Blood Edition are listed on the resume of gaming CPs then you know something is wrong. These were notorious for their crappy writing and clichés used so often. As I have mentioned previously, eventually these writers would slowly get away from such bad habits in storytelling. Are there still terrible CPs getting produced till this day? Yes, there are, but they are far and in-between today—Friday the 13th NES from L.W. Sulton is an example of quality CPs being written lately.
For the story itself, Forgotten Yellow is among the few that’s based off the game to come out in the last decade. There is one called Rotted Yellow and another titled Jessica based on a guy naming his Pikachu in the plot. Often, its Lavender Town and its backstory that was used the most to tell these campfire tales around the first gen games. It's nice a break for the writers to do so to keep things fresh instead of relying on the same theme. The plot centers around a guy who one day after completing all his games gets the urge to experience Yellow Edition again. However, instead of being the same old game he previously went through it plays very different on this occasion. Did his new copy of Yellow Version get swiped for a rom hack at a store? Or is there something terrible about his play through this time? Pokemon Creepypasta: Forgotten Yellow Review A new edition of Horror Gaming is up and as we check out a Zelda II creepypasta from nearly a decade ago. Yes, it has been almost since last year when I did a Horror Gaming review. Even though its April and Mario 35th anniversary is over, Nintendo has yet to announce Zelda’s own. Nintendo might reveal this at E3 since that event was confirmed to continue through a digital presentation. Zelda might not sell as much as Pokémon or even Mario buts it’s still their top tier franchise—Breath of the Wild alone sold more than 17 million units which is more than any other before. The fact they have yet to announce a Zelda 35th anniversary is odd especially considering Skyward Sword is getting ported to the Switch. I guess we will have to wait until E3, but if Nintendo doesn’t go through for this then it’s the most ridiculous decision they could make.
As for the creepypasta, it was written from a user named Irfan and it’s based on the sequel. The theme has a man named Greg seeking out a way to play the second game to relive childhood memories. Upon getting the game, he then starts to experience weird things happening during his play through. Whenever a CP uses this old repetitive mold for story telling then you know that can’t be a good sign. That is basis to how these CPs started out during the early 2010s with character X wanted to relive their childhood. The only CP that was a shiny gem among a sea of creepypastas was Ben Drowned and Team Fortress 2: Play Dead. Those two stories and another Team Fortress 2 CP which released around the same time were the sole gems. Zelda II: The Lost Level Creepypasta Review A new edition of Horror Gaming is up as we continue the season of Halloween with a Metroid CP. Usually around this time is where I start ramping up the horror themed articles and reviews. That makes perfect sense since one; this is one of my favorite seasons and holiday and two, its fits the time of the year. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the occasion then to write reviews of gaming creepypastas. Now, it has been a while since we have done a Metroid one and in fact two years has passed when the last one was written. Similar to Zelda and Pokémon, this series of stories has always included a nice collection of solid Creepypastas. Sure, a terrible one will appear once in a while but, in my experience rarely does this happen. I already went over Secret Worlds and it’s probably the best one out there is next to Metroid: Mother?
The story is from 2013 and is written by a user named Roxie-Curtis on the Some Ordinary Gamers site. When these gaming creepypasta come from the early 2010s it usually never ends well. Even though this does not come from Creepypasta wikia however, it still won’t mean the pastas are better. So far, every CP I reviewed from the early 2010s usually ends up with a crappy rating. Of course, there are some exceptions as seen from The Theater but overall, it is just cheap writing in most cases. The theme is about a girl who remembers playing Super Metroid fondly when she was younger. Feeling nostalgic, she goes to her parent’s house to retrieve her old games to relive childhood memories. However, the game starts acting weird to the point none of these things were supposed to happen. Is something horrible lurking behind the scenes causing this copy to act up? Or is this just a series of coincidental glitches and age getting to the cartridge? Super Metroid Creepypasta review A new edition of Horror Gaming is up, and we check an old Mario Creepypasta from several years ago. Another Summer has gone by, and now we enter the Autumn and Halloween seasons. The beauty of Fall is there are lush colors of the leaves that turn into their orange, red and brown textures. While Summer is known for its hot days and beach retreats, Autumn brings a more relaxing time with its scenery. The thing about the Fall season though is it has Halloween and Thanksgiving which are better holidays compared to the Fourth of July. Don’t get me wrong I love the BBQs and enjoy sipping on apple cider while lounging near a pool. However, nothing beats a cool brisk late afternoon seeing different colored leaves and Jack O lanterns on an Autumn day. Even sipping a cold apple cider during this season and sitting on a porch has me dream about the cool late afternoons.
After the announcement of Super Mario 3D All Stars, I have a horror story review involving the Plumber’s first 3D outing. It’s about a bad experience gone wrong for a couple regarding a copy of SM64. It’s not the first time I went over an SM64 CP but after the last three involving the Plumber we know this never ends well. Between the badly written Sonic and Mega Man stories, the Marios fall into the same area. Even Pokémon manages its quality for these types of stories, despite the occasionally terrible CP coming out. You can’t just call it after a game's name and insert some edgy subtitle because that sounded “kewl”. Sometimes a simple thing like Secret Worlds or even an original name of the story is better than sounding edgy in a cheap manner. So how will the guy and his girlfriend get through the night with a classic? Super Mario 64: Damned Creepypasta Review A new edition of Horror Gaming is up as this time we have a double header of two old Mario Creepypastas. These are MaRIo and MaRIo II which are Super Mario Bros 1 and 2 Creepypastas. Both of these short stories originated on Creepypasta Wiki back in the early 2010s. It was a time when gaming CPs started to appear on the internet just as original horror stories began gaining popularity. Unfortunately, there was also a time when gaming CPs literally came off as the definition of crappy writing. They got written so badly that you would start thinking the Twilight books and movies were actually amazing. Yeah, it's been a while since anyone has used a Twilight joke but it's all I could think of that was better than both stories. A matter of fact, you can't find most of these Creepypastas as either the authors deleted them or Creepypasta Wiki did for the writers. As for both of these tales, the first one titled MaRIo is about a young guy clearing out his father attic after he died. Upon searching the attic, he stumbles upon a box of old NES games that his father collected. Inside the box, an odd copy of Super Mario Bros for the NES was at the bottom. When he tried it out, strange things start to happen and causing him to guess whether this was even his Dad's. For MaRIo II, the plot continues from the last one as the guy from first story hands his older sibling their father's games. The new character wondered why his younger brother handed down their father's collection. Upon looking through the box of NES titles, an odd copy of Super Mario Bros 2 was found. The cover art had a grotesque version with Mario having a Toad's head while holding Birdo's own. So, what strange and creepy stuff will these person encounter from their father's odd collection? Come in and find out... MaRIo and MaRIo II (Creepypastas) Review |
